Camping

With the recession, people are starting to look more and more for ways to cut down on costs when they want to go on holiday, or take some time out from their work or busy schedule. One of the best ways to do this, whether you are holidaying in this country or another, is to go camping. It is one of the best ways to truly experience the great outdoors, and if you are willing to put up with a few sacrifices to luxury then it can be a very rewarding way to go on holiday.

Camping can be very inexpensive when compared with other holidays, though the initial costs can be quite large, especially if you are planning on going away with family or friends. There is often a lot of different equipment that is necessary when you are camping, such as a tent, camping stove, sleeping bags, heaters if it is cold, fans if it is hot, and other things that often depend on the environment in which you are camping, such as wind shields.

After the initial costs however, if you are careful you should be able to maintain and keep these items for further use in future camping trips. This is rarely the case when you go on a conventional holiday: you cannot take your hotel with you, nor can you take away the bed. This makes it important to buy good quality equipment, as the higher the quality, the greater the likelihood that it will last long enough to use again.

Outdoor Activities

When referring to Outdoor activities it usually refers to activities done in nature away from society. It is true that some outdoor activities such as running and cycling are done in society.

Outdoor activities are very beneficial, they usually have goal directed activities which helps inspire individuals or groups. Some of these outdoor activities are: backpacking, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, and rafting. Water sports, snow sports, and horseback riding would also be categorised as an outdoor activity. These activities are mainly physical but are mentally, emotionally and spiritually rewarding. Outdoor activities may also be pursued for the purposes of finding peace in nature, enjoying life, and relaxing. They are alternatives to expensive forms of tourism. Outdoor activities are also frequently used as a medium in education and teambuilding.

Out door activities can be categorized in to 8 groups, these include:

  • Mountain activities .e.g. Rock climbing
  • Forest activities .e.g. Camping
  • Beach and sea activities .e.g. Scuba diving
  • Fresh water activities .e.g. Canoeing
  • Aero activities e.g. ballooning
  • Desert Activities e.g. Desert jeep safari
  • Family activities e.g. Theme park
  • Cultural and historical activities e.g. Metal detecting

Outdoor activities are overall a fun activity. There are plenty of organisations across the UK that offers outdoor activities. They are booked for leisure or parties such as hen, stag, and birthday. It can be used with companies and schools, to help them gain experience and team building; away from the work place. As with most activities, it entails many risks. A simple accident may create a dangerous situation that requires survival skills. However, given correct precautions, outdoor recreation can be enjoyable and safe.

Hiking

Walking is obviously the most accessible sport in the world. It’s something we do every day. Hiking therefore has been a very popular and accessible sport. Though, the biggest factor for a high and increasing number of hikers in Britain in due to the creation of national parks and designated hiking trails. The first park was created in 1951; this was ‘Peak District National Park’. It has been estimated that National Park usage increases each year. Currently around 35 million people go hiking each year in Britain’s 14 National Parks.

Hiking is an outdoor activity involves walking; in natural environments. As it is such a popular activity, that there are various hiking organizations. The biggest Hiking organisation in the UK is Ramblers. Ramblers alone possess a membership of around 135,000, and which has existed for close to 75 years.

Walking/Hiking is often seen as an activity for older people, although this isn’t the case. Out of the 135,000 members of Ramblers, a large segment is aged 20-30.

With Hiking, equipment is required. Hiking equipment is a necessity, and may be considered in several categories. The first category is ‘Items worn’; you need to have ideal footwear, clothing and headgear. The second category is ‘Carrying items’; you may require a backpack, walking stick or a waist pack. The third category is ‘Essential gear’; this can include items that are necessary for hiking safety and potential emergency items. Food and drink is also another important factor, which is a necessity. Obviously, Hiking isn’t as easy as just walking; you will need to be organized and prepared.

Ecology

Ecology literally means the study of life, and it is an important factor in lots of elements in our lives, from conservation to countering the effects of global warming. You do not need a degree or high flying qualifications in order to be interested in ecology and to make a difference to a cause, just a good knowledge of the facts and a lot of determination. The sad fact is that many politicians and people in power most of the time do not take ecological concerns anywhere near as seriously as they should, which means that getting them to take interest in such concerns can be very difficult. It is worth getting their attention, however, as they are the most likely to make an impact on a problem, due to their influence and monetary value.

The study of ecology has helped us to understand not only the world around us, but also the things that live in it. Our ideas of evolution came from one of the most prolific ecologists – Charles Darwin – whose discoveries and experiments have proven to be vital in our understanding of certain ecological processes and mechanisms. Ecology itself is more concerned with physiology, genetics and behaviour than environment, and this is a common misconception that people make. Many people think that it relates to environmentalism and natural history, but this is not usually the case, as it is more interested in biodiversity and how it affects an ecosystem, as opposed to the landscape or any other structure.

Conservation, Outdoor Activities, Hiking

Conservation is a resource that is used for allocation, and protection. It is a system of moral and standard principles which primary focuses on maintaining the health of the natural world. This includes its biological diversity. Within the conservation of the environment there are two Secondary focuses. This is on materials conservation and energy conservation. These secondary focuses are seen as an important factor, to protect the natural world. People who are involved in conservation are known as conservationists.

There are many groups of conservationists; however they have numerous shared goals. These goals are to:

  • Conserve habitat globally.
  • Stop deforestation
  • Protect sea life from extinction

The conservation ethic can be expressed by four R’s: “Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”

This communal ethic relates to local purchasing, and how it is sustained. They wish to use renewable resources, prevent harm to common resources; such as air and water quality. The principal that conservationist are trying to do is promote the principle of value explaining that the natural world has inherent and elusive worth.

The term “conservation” itself is very broad. There are many concepts for conservation, for example: cultural diversity, genetic diversity, environmental conservation, and seedbank. Recent movements within conservation are considered to be a resistance to commercialism and globalization. As these moral priorities are being rejected, it has consequently resulted in slow food. Benefits of conservation include:

  • Cultural
  • Natural Beauty
  • Sustained variation within species
  • Human
  • Sustained natural process
